Privacy Policy
Last updated: 22 March 2026
Overview
Stomp City is designed with privacy in mind. We do not require user accounts, passwords, or any personal information to use the app. This policy explains exactly what data is collected, stored, and transmitted.
Personal information
Stomp City does not collect any personal information. There are no user accounts, no login, and no names. You do not need to provide any identifying information to use the app.
If you request Stomp City in a new city, we ask to collect your email address solely to notify you when that city becomes available. Your email will not be used for marketing or shared with anyone else.
Location data
Stomp City uses your device's location services to track which streets you walk. Your detailed GPS traces (breadcrumbs) and walking history are stored entirely on your device and are never transmitted to any server.
However, your approximate current location (latitude, longitude, and a ~1.4km radius) is sent to OpenStreetMap's Overpass API to download nearby street data. The app needs to know the exact shape and position of streets near you so it can match your GPS trail against them and work out which streets you've walked. Think of it like downloading a local map, but for street data specifically. This is a public, read-only query and OpenStreetMap does not log individual requests.
- Detailed GPS traces and breadcrumbs never leave your device
- Walking history and completed streets are stored locally
- Approximate location is sent to OpenStreetMap only to fetch nearby street geometry
- You can revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings
Analytics
Stomp City uses Mixpanel (EU servers) for anonymous usage analytics. This helps us understand how the app is used and improve it. The following types of data are sent:
- App usage events (e.g. which tabs are viewed, when a walking session starts/ends)
- Aggregated progress (total streets completed, total distance walked)
- Challenge interactions (which challenges are viewed or shared)
- Location permission status
Analytics never include your GPS coordinates, walking routes, street names, or any personally identifiable information.
You can opt out of analytics entirely in the app's Info tab. When opted out, no data is sent to Mixpanel.
iCloud sync
If you are signed into iCloud on your device, Stomp City syncs your walking progress across your devices using Apple's iCloud Key-Value Store. This includes:
- Completed street IDs (OpenStreetMap way IDs, not location data)
- Visited plaques, bridges, and stations
- Total distance walked
This data is encrypted by Apple's iCloud infrastructure and is only accessible to your Apple account. No GPS coordinates or walking routes are synced.
Third-party services
Stomp City integrates the following third-party services:
- Mixpanel — anonymous usage analytics (EU servers). Mixpanel Privacy Policy
- OpenStreetMap Overpass API — street data queries (read-only, no user tracking)
- Apple iCloud — progress sync across your devices
Stomp City does not use any advertising services, tracking pixels, cookies, or fingerprinting.
Data storage & deletion
All app data — including your walking progress, GPS traces, challenge completions, and preferences — is stored locally on your device and optionally in your iCloud account.
You can delete all data at any time using the "Delete All Data" option in the app's Info tab. This permanently removes all local data and iCloud-synced data. Deleting the app also removes all local data.
Children's privacy
Stomp City does not collect personal data from anyone, including children under 13. The app is safe for users of all ages.
